Does Pregnancy Yoga Help Labour?

Sarah Carroll • Sep 06, 2023

Are you worried about labour and looking for ways to keep it short and sweet?

The anticipation of labour is a significant aspect of the pregnancy journey, prompting many expectant mothers to explore methods that could potentially ease the process. One question that arises is whether pregnancy yoga holds the key to shortening labour. In this blog, we delve into the intriguing question of whether pregnancy yoga can indeed have a positive influence on the duration of labor.

What is Pregnancy Yoga?

Pregnancy yoga is a specialised form of yoga tailored to the unique needs of expectant mothers. It emphasizes gentle stretches, breathing techniques, and relaxation exercises that promote physical wellness, emotional balance, and a deep connection with the growing baby. But the question we really want to know, will it help shorten my labour?

The Factors Influencing Labor Duration

Before diving into whether pregnancy yoga can shorten labour, it's important to recognise different factors that contribute to the duration of childbirth. These include:

1. Baby's Position: The baby's position in the womb and descent through the birth canal can influence the ease and pace of labour.

2. Cervical Readiness: The cervix must undergo gradual dilation and effacement to allow the baby to pass through. Cervical readiness varies among women.

3. Pelvic Muscle Tone: Strong pelvic muscles can facilitate more effective contractions and efficient labour.

4. Hormonal Balance: Hormones such as oxytocin (also known as the love hormone) play a significant role in initiating and progressing labour.

5. Relaxation and Stress Levels: High stress levels will slow down labour, while relaxation techniques will aid progression.

How Can Pregnancy Yoga Help?

Pregnancy yoga is renowned for its ability to address several of the factors listed above, which contribute to the potential shortening of labour:

1. Optimal Fetal Positioning: Certain yoga poses encourage space within the pelvis and in turn the birth canal to help baby on their way.

2. Pelvic Floor Strengthening: Pregnancy yoga includes exercises that strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. This can promote optimal muscle tone, aiding with labour and recovery. I talk about these exercsies more here.

3. Relaxation Techniques: Yoga promotes relaxation and mindfulness, which lower stress levels and create a conducive environment for efficient labour progression.

4. Breathing Techniques: Practicing breath awareness and controlled breathing during yoga will help you manage pain, reduce tension, and encourage relaxation during labour. It will also give your mind something else to focus on besides the discomfort you may be feeling.

5. Strength building: Pregnancy yoga provides movements to build strength in your body where you're going to need it during labour, i.e. in your legs to enable you to squat (possibly supported) to deliver your baby.

Every pregnancy, labour and birth is different, pregnancy yoga can help in many different ways to prepare you for labour, both physically and mentally.

There have been a number of studies around the world on the connection between pregnancy yoga and labour duration. The potential benefits it offers for physical strength, relaxation, and mental clarity are undeniable. Pregnancy yoga empowers expectant mothers to embrace their bodies, connect with their babies, and approach childbirth with a sense of preparedness and confidence.

Ultimately, pregnancy yoga is more than just a means to an end; it's a holistic practice that supports your well-being during this transformative phase of life. Whether it leads to a shorter labor or not, the journey of pregnancy yoga is a gift that nurtures your body, mind, and spirit as you embark on the remarkable journey of motherhood.
